Straight Axles and Drop Axles
The front axle on your truck is called the steering axle. The rear ones are called drive axles. There are also what’s called drop axles, but we’ll get to those in a minute.
Your truck’s steering axle(s) are what allows you to turn. The wheels on these axles are attached to the frame of the truck by means of a suspension system. This system–which consists of springs, shock absorbers, and more–absorbs the bumps and jolts of the road so that you don’t have to.
The drive axle(s) provide power to the wheels. This power comes from the engine via the transmission and driveshaft. These axles are also suspended, but not as much as the steering axle(s). This is because they don’t need to be able to turn.
A drop axle is a drive axle that’s been lowered in order to improve the truck’s stability and handling. These are usually found on trucks that are carrying heavy loads or those that are going really fast.
